Programme description

The music collaboration with South Africa started in 2000 under the name of Mmino, which means music. The programme is financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Arts and Culture in South Africa, with the National Arts Council of South Africa responsible for conducting the cooperation with Concerts Norway.

The main goal is to strengthen the music arena in South Africa and to forge lasting bonds between Norwegian and South African organisations institutions and musicians by providing grants for projects in the fields of music education and exchange.

In 2008 Mmino was extended for three extra years, from 2008 to 2010, and now has the subtitle “Keeping Music Alive”.

Funds have been allocated for supporting different activities in the initiatives music education and exchange. This is intended to:

• Contribute to social and financial development for South Africans

• Reach out to all South African provinces and forge bonds between provincial and national activities

• Promote capacity building through collaboration between South African and Norwegian institutions

• Develop and support a reliable, efficient, effective and recognised culture support scheme
